Archived Redo Logs not Multiplexed when Restoring [message #259535]

Hi all,

For some reason when I issue the command

restore archivelog scn between xxxx and yyyy

only one of the two multiplexed groups of my archived redo logs is being restored -- the one that resides on /u03/archives/prod, but not the one that should be at /u02/archives/prod.

But two groups exist on my database, and both were backed up, as evidenced by my the output of the 'list archivelog all' statment issued *before* my restore:

In rman use,
rman>run{
set archivelog destination to
'/u02/archives/prod/1_5229_606497010.arc'
restore archivelog scn between x and y;
}

Why do you want it restores all copies?
One is sufficient to recover the database which is the purpose of restoring the archived logs.
RMAN restores the minimal data to recover the database, thanks to it.

Michel,

I wasn't sure how many redo logs were necessary to restore back the database to the point of the last change. Theoretically, if a commit isn't issued for a REALLY long time, isn't it possible that one would need more than the latest archived redo log?

However, one fact that might support your theory (at least in the case of this particular RMAN backup), is that when I tried to execute RECOVER DATABASE, RMAN did restore one and only one archived redo log, the latest one.

Still, the question remains: why is only the /u03 group of archived redo logs restored when I issue the RESTORE ARCHIVELOG SCN BETWEEN xxxx AND yyyy command?

OK. I just found out the answer to my own question. In the document Oracle Database Backup and Recovery Basics, 10g Release 2, I stumbled across this statement "Even if your redo logs are being archived to multiple destinations and you use RMAN to back up archived redo logs, RMAN selects only one copy of the archived redo log file to include in the backup set."
