I would like to backup one database and restore to another. Is this in any way possible? If so, how can I perform this? Both databases reside on seperate servers but share NFS. Also is there a way of speeding up the process? Will this be a hot or cold backup? I know in restoring I will probably have to change the database id? What the factors and steps involved? Can someone provide me with a sample script? Thank you so much for your time... Embarassed

Thanks for your response Brian! I have read about creating a duplicate database but the database to be restored already exists. The duplicate command, from what I understand, has never been utilized by previous DBAs and I don't want to mess up anything? Is there any other information you can provide for example, should I take a cold backup? How can I perform a restore on the other database?

You can't.
You have to export the original database and import in the target one.
Or maybe you can use transportable tablespaces.

Well really I think more information is needed on the OP's environment. You have the potential to actually refresh the development database with RMAN, however without more insight into your setup it's hard to say for certain.

Both databases are 9i. This is downtime allowed on Saturdays. Incremental backups are taken Sunday through Friday and a level 0 backup taken on Saturday. The last data refresh was taken two months ago.

It sounds like to me, you may be able to consider Resynchronize a Duplicate Database.
