Hello All,

I'm attending for DBA interviews , and I was asked this question.

The scenario is that I've the last night backup of my database. And today morning my users since 9 am started doing their transactions and suddenly one of the datafile has been lost due to media failure. There are no archivelogs or any redologs also to issue recover database statement.

Can somebody help me in giving out a solution for this and also all the possibilities and scenarios of Backup and Recovery using user level backups.

I'll be glad if someone can help me in this regard.

Regards,

Raj

if your database was in Noarchivelog mode then you can't recover database to the point of failure.
however you will simply restore your whole pervious backup.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I can go even for the data loss but I want to restore and recover my database.

My database is archivelog mode. But even the archive logs which are there on the disk have been lost due to media failure.

I've lost my datafiles and the archivelogs.

Either you have good backups or you get to start over from scratch.

If your database is in archive log mode and you have lost your datafiles and archive log files, the simple answer is....

database can be recovered until point of failure.

point of failure means restore the whole database and go for recovery until available archive logs.

then open the database with resetlogs, implies log sequence number is set to 0 in the redologs.

This termed as incomplete recovery.

Hope this helps.

thanx
