Hi everybody:

I have a PRODUCTION database, release 10.1.0.2 in archive mode. I installed a similar database (same SID, datafiles, redo logs) on another machine, but this one is on 10.2.0.2. Up to this point is NOT in archive log mode.

I want to know the possibilities or options I have to copy PERIODICALLY all data from 10.1.0.2 to 10.2.0.2 for testing purposes. The question is: Is it possible to copy archive logs from 10.1.0.2 and apply them to 10.2.0.2?

Any help is very appreciated. Thanks,

RMAN duplication is the easiest and most effective if you want to do this frequently.

No,

if you want to transfer you data from 10gr1 to 10gr2 then you should use export/import utility.

Thanks for your reply. I am new to RMAN. So what you are saying is that I can restore data to Oracle 10.2 using RMAN backups from 10.1? Where should I look in order to accomplish this? It is just to copy the Rman backups from 10.1 that I have on disk and use RMAN from 10.2 to restore them? Please explain or give me some pointers on this topic.

Difference in versions may matter a little (i have'nt done that in 10g yet).
No need to copy the backupsets.
Assuming you have same OS on both machines,
just share/nfsmount /backup on Node1 to Node2.
From Node2 the /backup should appear as local.
Else you need to copy the files across.

Thank you so much for your advise. I downloaded the Oracle Backup and Recovery Advanced User's Guide and read Chapter 13 to understand RMAN duplication. On the same chapter, Section 13-4 on RMAN DUPLICATE DATABASE: Prerequisites and Restrictions there is a note to "Review the restrictions section of the DUPLICATE command in the Oracle Database Backup and Recovery Reference for a complete list." I read all Chapter and found out that the DUPLICATE command can also be used to create a STANDBY database... hum

I became suspicious to the fact that before doing this post, I posted a question (http://www.orafaq.com/forum/t/77510/101533/) when I tried to create a Physical Standby database, 10.1 being the PRIMARY and 10.2 being the STANDBY. It turned out that Standby Databases MUST be created using the same Oracle Enterprise release.

As Oracle DataGuard Concepts and Administration Section 2.3.2 it says "This means the same release of Oracle Database Enterprise Edition must be installed on the primary database and all standby databases in a Data Guard configuration."

I downloaded and checked for the DUPLICATE command on the Oracle Database Backup and Recovery Reference and guess what? On page 2-106 there is a line that says "Duplication must be done to the same platform as the source datababse."

What does this mean? platform meaning operating system or platform meaning Oracle Release? Maybe I am biased since I faced an earlier situation when creating a Standby Database...

I will take a shot and update this post. If someone knows about release incompatibilities between 10gR1 and 10gR2 using RMAN DUPLICATE command, let me know.

I have to admit that standby database is a different beast Smile.
I have not tried duplication across 10gR1 and 10gR2.
In general oracle terms, 'platform' means OS (as in certification matrix by 'platform').
I would setup a test case and try .

I proceed to do a test case as you suggested. Here's what has happened. I followed all the steps to perform RMAN DUPLICATE. My production database name is PROD (10gR1). My duplicate database name is STND(10gR2).
I ran a RMAN backup to DISK for PROD a few days ago. PROD is in archive log mode. I managed to copy the RMAN backup to the same directory structure and copied the archive logs as well.

I ran the rman duplicate command from STND server (10gR2) and got this error:

rman target sys/oracle@PROD nocatalog auxiliary sys/oracle@STND

Recovery Manager: Release 10.2.0.2.0 - Production on Wed Feb 28 16:11:44 2007

I ran the same command on the PROD server (10gR1) and it started. However, after restoring the datafiles and applying archive redo logs, it gave me an ORA-00279. To be honest, I didn't knew what to do at the moment, so I started sqlplus and issued the following commands:
alter database recover cancel;
alter database open resetlogs;
Then it gave me:
*
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01113: file 1 needs media recovery
ORA-01110: data file 1: '/u02/oradata/PROD/system01.dbf'

Please advise me what to do next. Maybe some pointers? Thanks,

RMAN-06429: TARGET database is not compatible with this version of RMAN

You cann't create duplicate DATABASE from 10gr1 to 10gr2 through RMAN DUPLICATE option.
you have to install 10gr2.

BTW. for your requirement you should use EXPORT/IMPORT utility.

The said error was with "RMAN 8.0.4.0 to 10.1.0.0"
As i said already i have not tested with 10r1-10gr2. It may or may not be possible.
But the OP claims,

SO RMAN did the Job. This may be something else.
@OP.
check the compatible in auxillary. Set it be same as in target.
post the complete error sequence of ora-00279.
Make sure you have taken a FULL backup first and then do TSPITR.
Again, it may not be possible to do this. Let us give a try Smile
