Can anyone guide me in creating a backup database in a different location and periodically apply logs generated in the primary database into the backup database

Thanks in advance

Please do not crosspost.
Are you looking into standby database?
or
Just a duplicate database?
Both the cases are exclusively deal in the RMAN documentation.
Please refer documentation.

by mistake, initially I posted in security, then I realised the error and re posted.

What I intend to create is a second database which is in a different location, which can be used in case of a disaster to the 1st database

Standby Database is what you want.
For 9i
http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96566/rcmstand.htm#1656
You can create a standby with RMAN.
In 10g, you can use RMAN or dataguard

Yes.
You can use RMAN as said before
or
data-guard

To sajut,

please notice that standard editition doesn't support automatically transfer of redologs, so you have to ftp or use nfs or some other product to get the archived redologs to the standby node.

best regards.
