Hello,

I don't know a great deal about Oracle administration. The extent of my knowledge is basically importing a dump file to a new database. This time, however, I have all of the data files from an Oracle 8 db and not a backup. I'm not sure what the exact version is. We're running 9.2.0.1.0.

How can I load this data into my Oracle instance? Thank you very much for any help, I really appreciate it. I hope you'll pardon my ignorance.

Thanks,
Nick

You mean, the database datafiles (from oracle 8.x)?
You cannot directly 'load' them or plug them into oracle 9.2.x. Try building an oracle 8 database with those files and take an export or upgrade into 9i.

Thanks for your help. Yes, I mean the database datafiles (USERS01.DBF etc). I wasn't sure if there was a way to restore those files and in the process have it perform an upgrade.

I'll have to see if I can find a machine (and the installer) to put Oracle 8 on.

Thanks again,
Nick

Does anyone know if 8 is available for download anywhere? I can't seem to find it on the Oracle site. Thanks.

Thanks Mahesh. I did finally find our CD (and cleaned my office in the process). Pardon my ignorance again, but I've got it installed on Windows 2000 Server and the Database Assistant won't open. What could cause this?

Thanks for any help, I really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Nick

So, you installed oracle 8i database server components.
You tried to invoke the DBCA from 8i installation.
It fails? right?
IS there any error messages displayed?
Actually you do not need the DBCA here.
You already have the 8i files. (datafiles/logfiles/controlfiles and pfile and traced text of controlfile).
Just copy those files here. recreate the controlfile /mount the database.
The method is outlined here
http://www.fors.com/orasupp/winnt/42940_1.HTM
Just search the forum for 'cold backup' or 'cold clone' for more examples.

Thanks again Mahesh, I sincerely appreciate your help. No, I don't get any errors. I think it may have something to do with Java, but if I don't need it then I don't care.

I think I will be able to get the db restored. One more really, really dumb question. What are the default user and password for me to connect to SQL*Plus?

Well, for some reason I can't login. What should my host string be? I'm not sure if I have a database on the server right now, but I have to login to SQL*Plus to restore the db, correct?

Thanks,
Nick

Looks like it was a bad install. Reinstalled and now everything is working. Thanks again for your help.
