i did a whole db backup.

then i tried a recovery.

first it said in EM that the db needs to be shutdown.

then i get the msg :

The instance has been started in no-mount state.

what does it mean?

Use a command line rather than em. try 'startup' or 'startup pfile=<your pfile> if it is not in the default location.

You could also try 'startup mount' before recovery.
