backup set vs. Image Copy [message #153664]

I just read the manual of backup and recovery through RMAN.
I read, we can have to types of backup, backupset and Image copy.

I will be doing backup of a database,through RMAN, it will be backed up on disk first and then to tape.

Currently I do a online script backup.

Which backup will be faster (image copy or backupset)

Which backup will save backup space (image copy or backupset).

I read somewhere you cannot put image copy to tape from disk.

Please help.

Backupset is better than Image copy.

There are two types of backups in rman backupset and image copy backupset takes less space as it does not use unused blocks. image copy is same as that of os copy but rman image copy takes into consideration the oracle block size.

if you want to restore it to tape then go for backupset.

RMAN also offers PROXY copy as a backup type. In addition, a careful distinction needs to be made about unused block backups. 9i RMAN WILL backup a unused block that has been previously written to, but 10g RMAN will not.
