hai,
see in our firm , they are unnecessarily maintaining the old archive log files of last year....is this needed..?if we can delete..,then we can have more free space.if to delete , is there any script to perform the same.
any help is appreciated.

Depending on your retention policy,after the backup, you can always delete the archived logs.
If you are using RMAN , there are options to delete the archivedlogs immediately after the backup and rman can sync the catalog.
else
you can manually JUST delete it and update the catalog.
IF not using RMAN , no catalog is involved.
so you can just remove the archivelogs once they are backed up.

Before doing anything with backups, be sure what you are doing.
the doc deals extensively about the maintainence of RMAN catalog.
