Would any body through some light as to how RMAN woks with media manager, to backup the datafiles directly to tape. and what are the issues involved in that?
particularly network related issues...

Since Oracle first released RMAN for Legato back in Oracle 8, there is a Media Managment API, which backup software vendors implement in their software. It is a Oracle standard and they are using API calls to comminucate with RMAN.
The backup clients are used to transfer the data stream to the backup server and then to the tape library. The issues could be if your connection is very slow the agent to timeout, and gave up on sending data.
