Hi,

First of all My warm Regards to My old friends and the OraFaq community memebrs and admins, who always helped me in need.

Today,i have a scenario
and i have to provide a solution to this,i hope you can help me out

The scenario is

1. there is one company in location1 it has two more centers location 2 ( 3 kms away from location 1)
and Location 3 ( 500 kms away from location 1)

2. Location1 has Linux 10g DB and Linux on it.

3. All three sites have a centralized database.

4. all three sites(Location) are connected with 4 mbps-VPN line.

5. At night 8 pm all offices(Official work) get closed.

6. The db size is min 30 gb.

Now we want some scenario for disaster recovery(Backup)
So please suggest..

a. what hardware configuration should be required?
b. And which software requirement?
c. What oracle licence we have to use?and what could be the costing?
d. Which oracle sripts have to be used?
e. The need is for Online backup.how we can do online backup at a distant place?
f. Offline backup is good or online?
g. Can it be done "sychronised" backup online at distant location.
h. Is it must to use clustering?or RMAN can handle it?and how?

Thanks in Advance.

Regards,
Saurabh Jaglan

You need to start by defining the requirement. List all possible types of failure (including network outage; disc failure; server stolen; planned maintenance; many more.....) and for each one specify how much down time and how much data loss is acceptable. This is not your decision, it is the client's decision. And it must be documented.

Hi John,

Thanks for Replying.

The client also takes backup.
but they want that a syc copy of db should be available at anyother location(recovery db)...should be online backup ,sync with the main server backup
in case if their is any issue(disaster) with main DB or its recovery DB.
then they can ustilise the other1.
regarding downtime..the offices/transaction get close after 8 pm and starts in morning at 7 am.

Regards,
Saurabh

Thank you for ignoring my suggestion for documenting the requirement. I'm not going to write your service level agreement for you. You have to do some work, you know. It sounds as though your client wants:

1. Acceptable data loss: unspecified.
2. Downtime between 07:00 and 20:00: unspecified.
3. Downtime between 20:00 and 07:00: any amount permitted.

You can't design anything with a service level agreement like that.

One solution: Standby database(s):

LOCATION-1 LOCATION-2 LOCATION-3
------------- ------------- -------------
Primary db1 Standby db1
                    Primary db2 Standby db2
Standby db3 Primary db3

Add adequate number of CPU's and memory to all three servers.
